This is the fifth article in the series App of the Week series.
For the longest time, I was simply using Apple’s native Mail app for all of my electronic mail. Unfortunately it is not overly friendly with Gmail and so I had to forward all of my accounts into a single one and then connect that to my phone. It functionally worked, but was very far from ideal or effective. Then they updated the Gmail iOS app and my world was turned upside down. In fact, it helped me get to Inbox: Zero nearly right away.
The Good
There are no other alternative email iOS apps for all Gmail users.
- Google Apps Integration Whether it is replying in the email to Google+ mention or accepting an event that automatically puts it on your Google calendar, the integration with other Google products is amazing. They went above and beyond on this one.
- Multiple Account Sign-in As I mentioned before, I had to use a complex system to read all my emails right after they came in, but Google now lets you sign into multiple accounts without having to log out. (Push notification could use some work though)
- Infinite Scrolling Inbox Before, you had to scroll down and press a button to load more emails. Now you can keep scrolling to your face turns blue and you will not stop until you have reached the last email in your inbox.
The Bad
I would like to see a few more things changed.
- Not Native This is a gripe with all Google iOS apps, but the fact that you have to log in to Google on a separate screen really needs to get fixed. Let them do it Apple!
- Better Push Notifications From the base screens, you can see that you have 14 unread messages, but when you get into the app and look at the multiple accounts you have, its notification system is off and you almost have to do a grand sweeping of all your accounts to see where the unread email is.
- No Swipe To Delete This is truly nit-picking at this point, but you do not have the basic iPhone function of swiping from right to left to delete an email.
What do you love or hate about the Gmail iOS app?
