Have you ever read the Terms of Service?
For most of us, it’s that annoying box that pops-up and gets in the way of our app or online service—but it’s actually a lot more.
So much more, that when you really begin to look at it under a microscope, it’s easy to grab your foil hat and delete all your online accounts.
I’m not exaggerating.
Terms of Service
Michael Keller and Josh Neufeld have put together a palatable resource for Aljazeera America on understanding Terms of Service—and the world of Big Data.
It’s done in a creative ‘comic book’ style that makes this dry and complicated topic easy to understand:
It’s not a short read—but it should be required reading!
I would venture to say that if we had all been reading something like this when we first signed-up for Gmail and Facebook, a decent percentage of us would have hit ‘cancel’ and never looked back.
This Terms of Service comic isn’t doom and gloom with a strong call to deletion action, but serves well in understanding many of the concerns and arguments surrounding the private marketplace’s use of our personal profiles.
