This is the sixth article in the series App of the Week series.
Google has done something that many people may say is silly and a waste of time with their flagship video website, YouTube. They made an iOS app for filming, editing, and uploading videos to YouTube and all in a separate app from their original YouTube app. Some would question why even taking the time and money to create it when Apple has a native video recorder and you can upload directly to YouTube from the camera roll. I will show below that it could actually be an amazing move on Google’s part.
The Good
YouTube Capture actually turns out to be a great application to get for iOS for regular YouTubers.
- More Usability Google is trying to create a community and culture here and what they need is more and more content to comment, share, and like. The iPhone is by far the easiest way to do that. You film, edit, and upload all in a short amount of time. Any other process is two steps or more, so expect a ton of videos to be coming. (Not necessarily good quality though)
- Social Sharing Integration Now, not only can you film, edit, and upload all within this application, you can also instantly link it to Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. They know that video content is on the horizon with LTE cellphone speeds just around the corner. Get on board now people!
- Fast From Start To Finish YouTube says you can make an entire video and have it posted to YouTube in only 3 clicks. Of course, that is not giving it a title, editing it for any cropping timeline mistakes, or social sharing, but three clicks is very impressive.
The Bad
Do we want to sacrifice great, yet few videos for good and nearly endless content? (I recognize I just said their are only a few videos, but there is more video on there than one person could watch in their lifetime)
- Quality Will Go Down iPhone’s camera is good, but not amazing. The editing makes crappy footage look better, but the overall quality of YouTube will go down. But the worst part may be how many personal video clips will go up where they think it is a 5-star production… *sigh*
- Nothing Innovative YouTube had the ability to provide something that no one else has. Sure, social share is great, but is that the only benefit? Why would anyone want to switch from Viddy? None right now.
- Ugh, Two Apps It looks like Google is taking a page out of the Facebook strategy by making a separate app so as to not have a bloated single one, but it makes for an annoyance to film in one and then network with the video is a completely different app. #firstworldproblems
What do you love or hate about YouTube Capture?

It looks like a cool app. I am downloadiing it right now! What do you film all your video with?

Canon 3Ti for the edited stuff, but thinking of doing a quicker/less edited video weekly with the YouTube Capture.

That is sweet! I want to purchase a great camera this year! I need to get on the whole youtube thing! Can’t wait to see how your youtube capture goes!

I might also do jut the Canon thing… unsure of doing poor quality video work just because it is easier. :/ You thinking of doing any more video stuff outside of the two G+ Hangouts specifically for your blog?
