There’s nothing that drives me more crazy than when someone says to me,
“Can you get rid of those black bars?”
or
“Why did they chop the top and bottom off?”
I will now make them watch this (video below), instead of pulling-out my hair trying to explain widescreen vs full screen.
Take a look:

Of all the videos to not be widescreen…

Why did they chop the top and bottom off? Yes, seriously. Invent a technique that widens the screen while including the top and bottom of the original shot. Zooming in for most stuff, and just zoom out and include everything for dramatic stuff.
Look again that last picture. Whole path, and the top of the mountain. Widescreen shows a town and the path continuing. If you could see the mountaintop, bottom of the path, town, and the forested part, this would be an awesome scene. Instead, one or the other. Why? Because stupid people see widescreen as better. NO, the whole picture, top/bottom/left/right is better. Instead they cut.

Preach it, brother.
Eric Dye says
You know THAT’S right!

That’s one of the points, but from others I have had this same question from why on a widescreen tv not just zoom in a bit to get rid of the black bars. It’s not the same argument as the full screen/widescreen scenario which is totally understandable.

and to show you the argument i had to see how it’s even worse.. http://i.imgur.com/mFJGzAI.jpg

Ah! Good, good!
