Some people say that their best ideas come in the shower. Others say, as they are laying down to sleep or brushing their teeth or mowing, they find this is when they are able to think best. But why is it so easy to be able to get great ideas in such an unusual place?
Here is a quote from the video below:
The ideas that have been half-forming at the back of our minds, ideas about what the true purpose of our lives might be and what we should do next, keep up their steady inward pressure – but now there is a lot less to stop them reaching full consciousness. We’re not meant to be thinking and so – at last – we can think freely and courageously.
As a counselor, this is acutally a coping skill for anxiety called mindfulness. It was present long before we had formal, professional counseling though. We see this time of approach in church when we have devotionals where we are quietly reading or praying. It’s in the Catholic practice of sitting in silence to hear the voice of God where we verbally are silent but also cognitively still. And we naturally do this when we are sipping coffee, coloring a coloring book, and listening to music.
