What upsets me the most, is that they said that we’re not friendly. That makes me sad. We’re supposed to be the melting pot of cultures, and we keep to ourselves all the time. I’ve got to make a point to be friendly. It’s amazing to see a completely different culture and viewpoint, makes me think about my assumptions.

Don’t get too upset Josh. Something we have to appreciate in light of this video is that, along with the life and culture they encountered in the US being VERY different from their own, their definition of what it means to be “friendly” is also different. What they do or what we do in one way or another isn’t necessarily wrong…. just different. We all need to look at and acknowledge our own ignorance/lack of knowledge in the mirror, in each culture, people group.

I think that also this can vary from place to place. I’d say that here in London people are very UN-friendly, however when I was living in Hawaii people were HUGELY friendly. I think the US is friendly as a result of that experience!

That is because hawaii has a very different culture from the mainland, that said this was a good video. I feel for the guy explaining how to live to the students as a host family for exchange students we had to explain a lot of things we just assumed were normal such as how to use a toilet and the shower.

Great video. Our church has helped refugees from Burundi, Congo, and Rwanda. They are incredible gifts to our faith community. They have taught us much about faith, generosity, America and life. Thanks for the video. It reminded me to remember the cultural changes and the opportunities we have before us.
