I’d say that the vast majority of people find it really helpful to listen whilst they are working.
For me, it took me a long time to get to that place, I’ve always been one to work in silence, and even now I’ve just paused my music to help me focus on what I am writing.
Having said that I do listen to music a lot more whilst I work now. I find it helpful in a number of ways, it inspires me, it help lifts my mood, it spurs me on, and it creates an atmosphere whereby I feel great about getting down to some work. In a way it brings a certain freedom to my whole situation.
It’s possible, on the freedom part, that my emotion is based on my past. For the first few years of my working life I was not actually allowed to listen to music at work at all. You see, I worked in a call-centre, primarily answering phones and although, in my mind, headphones would have still been the perfect solution, the managers who were micro-management pro’s must have seen it as a part of their control taken away.
I know I am not the only person who has known that kind of oppression in the workplace, it goes on the world over and you would think that in this day and age with the information and research that is available, new and better management practices would be more widely used.
So you guys who are able to listening to music, that is a blessing, so know that and fully appreciate it for the blessing that it is!
I thought that it would be really interesting to see what other people in the community are listening to at the moment. One of the most exciting things for me about listening to music whilst I’m working, is discovering new music, creating new playlists and keeping it fresh!
So what are you listening to right now? Tell us in the comments below, lets share and make new discoveries.
Don’t feel that you are limited to just sharing Christian music, I know that people will be listening to a wide range of music.

Thanks for the detailed list, Douglas. I’m also really enjoying listening to TED talks right now.

Guster and Mumford and Sons on Grooveshark
Kyle Reed says
guster, it is easy to forget about them, thanks for the reminder.
James Brooks says
Checking Guster out today – thanks bro!

Part of this is embarassing – but in the spirit of fun:
1. Sermons from my pastor on our church website at centergrovelife.org. I only do this when I’m doing work that doesn’t require a ton of focus. (I’m self-employed so sometimes I simply have to roll up my sleeves and do the boring, dirty work)
2. I love the iTunes classical radio station: “Barock Music”. It’s very calming when I need to focus.
3. Every now and then I really get in the mood for Dragonforce. (Told you it was embarassing).
Ben Miller says
Up until a week ago, I was working in sweet silence. Unfortunately, for the past week I’ve been listening to an awful radio station that the ladies in the office across the hall have on way too loud. It’s some kind of adult contemporary/country garbage, and the noise goes right through the ceiling into my office. π
Thanks for letting me vent! I feel better.
James Brooks says
Eep, sorry about your situation. Headphones?
Morehart says
The Swell Season, Mumford & Sons, & some E.S, Posthumus for inspiration!
Tim Keller on Podcast!
James Brooks says
Checking them out now. A lot of my friends have been talking about Tim Keller recently, apparently he is a rad preacher.
Josh Wagner says
I’m not listening at work right now, because I work in the evening today. But I’ll probably be listening to Anberlin, some Daft Punk, and other random goodness.
James Brooks says
Anberlin, I’m liking the sound of it. Am adding it to my Spotify! Thanks Josh
Andrew Riches says
Well, the woman in picture isn’t listening to anything because she’s wearing ear defenders not headphones.
Deliberate April Fool’s joke I’m sure π
Kyle Reed says
These are always my favorite post.
3 bands that are a must right now for me:
1) Eisely-Amazing stuff
2) Daniel Bashta-Ummm this album will be incredible.
3) The City Hermonic-their song Manifesto is probably one of my favorites right now.

Broken Bells
Kyle Reed says
that is good stuff right there
Brian Alexander says
Yes, and Sleigh Bells are good as well. If you are into “dirty” music. ]
By dirty I mean it’s purposely done that way. The music isn’t clear, and it’s distorted sometimes. Just take a listen and see what I mean. You’ve probably heard some of their stuff on car commercials on TV. http://www.last.fm/music/Sleigh+Bells
James Brooks says
Liking the sound of it!
Brian Alexander says
Yes James. It’s good music. Check out the above band I posted too. Might take you a while for them to grow on ya. lol
Drew Palko says
I’m on 2 polar opposites right now. One side is Dubstep (Doctor P, Skrillex, Butch Clancy, Bassnectar, and the like) and the other side is like Folky/Alternative music (Deathcab, Pomplamoose, Ingrid Michaelson…)
James Brooks says
I LOVE Pomplamoose! π
Alhadis says
I’m listening to “Blissfully Exsanguinated” by Defeated Sanity. π
I’m Christian, but my choice of music certainly isn’t, haha.
Chip Holt says
I’ve been listening to the new Emery album and The Beautiful Mistake this morning – but I’m making a baptism promo video today, so I might find something a bit less screamo for the afternoon.
