If you’re trying to figure out where to host your personal blog or church website, chances are you’ve felt a little overwhelmed. You could just find the cheapest price, but that can be dangerous. Something I highly discourage. I’ve recently done some work on a website that’s hosted on a cheap host and it’s so slow! Now, back to the point of this post.
Should you look for dedicated hosting, cloud hosting, private cloud or managed cloud?
Confusing, right?
Even these terms will vary from host to host, depending on what kind of traffic you expect.
Hopefully, this easy to read flowchart can aid you in figuring out which type of hosting is right for you:

What type of hosting do you use?

I’m using a Windows dedicated server. I’m thinking of the next upgrade to get out of the hardware constraints. Is cloud server better than dedicated server? What cloud server company do you recommend?

I would say it’s ‘different,’ rather than ‘better.’
I recommend looking at MediaTemple or Site5.

Just because it’s cheap doesn’t automatically make it slow. Having been in the web industry for about 14 years, I can tell you that there is more to hosting than that diagram.
Also, since it’s from Rackspace, it is obviously skewed toward their products. And they have great products, but just because Rackspace’s flow chart shows you should use a dedicated server doesn’t mean you actually should.
For most church websites, shared hosting is going to be the most effective. You get to have a fairly responsive web site and it doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg. You don’t have to worry about managing the server, you don’t have to worry about scalability, you just deploy your site.

BTW, nice picture of cPanel, the most used control panel software for shared hosting 😉

Very true.

We use icdsoft.com and have used godaddy.com as well. I have tried other hosts but always go back to icdsoft.com because of their support and up-time.

Great!
