jQuery is arguably the web’s most popular JavaScript library. One of the biggest advantages of the library and its community the sheer number of plugins that are available for it.
I was recently talking to the team on the back channel about having a slick way of engaging visitors and readers via notifications, and Tom obliged.
The result? A wickedly-cool sliding notification that we’re going to find a use for across our properties. Check it out:
Essentially, SlideNote is an attempt to engage readers in a way that grabs their attention without directing them away from a page or totally overlaying the content.
It’s an easy way to display sliding notifications on your website or in your web application. You don’t even have to be much of a coder to take advantage of it.
But if you are interested, the plugin can be driven by elements that exist on the current page or by content retrieved via Ajax. It also supports multiple instances per page, and is completely configurable via CSS. This means that you can make a single notification look something like this:
Or like this:
You can read more about the various options, see a demo, or download the plugin on the project’s homepage, From you programmer-types, you can checkout the project on GitHub, too.

it’s beautiful. And that could make for some very effective ads.
Is there a way to reopen with a click? I’m sure a little end-user js modding could build it in…
Way to go Tom.

Once you scroll back up to the top of the page, it will reset the plugin and, once you’ve scrolled down, the notification appears again.
There’s a balance I was trying to strike between being engaging and annoying 😉
