I thought about writing another post that included statistics of online pornography or some some facts about the negative impact on your spiritual, physical and mental health; but I think it’s important to bring to light the importance of understanding the level and/or depth of your connection with pornography.
It’s important to understand the depth of your online pornography addiction to effectively deal with it. I don’t necessarily mean the frequency or the type pornography use, either—although I think that should be considered—what I mean is how deep are the roots.
Here are a few questions you should reflect on:
- How old was I when first exposed to pornography?
- Have I experienced sexual abuse?
- Have I ever sexually abused someone?
- How much have I indulge in sexual activities before knowing Christ?
Keep in mind that I am no psychologist nor an expert on this topic. All I know comes from experience, the struggle in my own life, as well as the struggles I’ve seen friends face and stood beside while staring down this Goliath named, Porn.
These are some of the questions that should be asked when surveying the battleground against pornography. You can let out a war cry and assemble your weapons and go into battle, but without proper knowledge of your enemy, you’re going to end up losing the war.
In my experience, understanding your own past with sex gives you an idea of just how deep the roots are—how advanced the army being faced is. If someone has been sexually abused as a child, your a-typical “men against porn” group and installing a monitoring app on your computer isn’t going to get the job done. The roots remain and the battle will never be won, as the deeper issues are never unearthed and victory can never be claimed. These deep seeded experiences setup strongholds that must be taken down, not only to gain victory over pornography, but gain victory in Christ to the fullest.
So, before raising your sword against pornography, take a moment and stare down the enemy. You may need a bigger club or maybe you need to call in some more troops by taking a visit to a Christian counselor:
