Turntable: Music Reviews

How do you get your groove on?

Music is an important and influential part of our culture.

I don’t know about you, but I love having some music playing while I’m working; and with today’s technology, it’s become a lot easier to discover new artists and quickly ‘pull-up’ whatever I’m in the mood for.

Recently on ChurchMag, we’ve begun to review some music artists and hope to continue to do so in the future.

So far we’ve reviewed:

  • ‘Ctrl’ by Derek Webb
  • ‘Eye On It’ by tobyMac
  • ‘Gravity’ by Lecrae
  • ‘For the Glory’ by The O.C. Supertones
  • Gray Havens [Free Download]
  • ‘The New Song’ by Gangai Victor
  • ‘Five Album Giveaway’ by Josh Garrels
  • ‘Thrift Store Jesus’ by Heath McNease [Free Download]
  • Summer Jam Edition
  • ‘The Mantis and the Moon EP’ by Son of Laughter
  • ‘Beyond the Frame’ by Andy Gullahorn
  • ‘Meet Me at the Edge of the World’ by Over The Rhine
  • ‘I Was Wrong, I’m Sorry & I Love You’ by Derek Webb
  • Lecrae’s ‘Church Clothes, Vol. 2’
  • ‘Engine of a Million Plots’ by Five Iron Frenzy
  • ’Seek You First’ by Jordan and Kristin Rippyx

It’s a humble start, but like I said, we hope for the list to grow.

Music reviewed for the ChurchMag community, by the ChurchMag community.

It should be a diverse and enjoyable experience. 🙂

What’s some of your favorite music?

What do you like to drop on the ‘turntable?’

    LEcrae, not LAcrae.

A new album that you can download for free is Propaganda’s Excellent. It is available on iTunes and on the download page of his label[0]. I haven’t listened to it yet, but apparently it’s supposed to be very hard-hitting lyrically.

Have you looked at Andy Hunter? He recently released a new album called Glow, available on iTunes, Amazon (and my personal favourite, cause it’s the only place I can download from) bandcamp.com[1].

When the new Muse album comes out, that’d be a good one to review.

Lecrae is interesting…he’s talented, but he seems to be stuck in the same topics over and over again and just doesn’t have the diversity I’m looking for when listening to a rap artist…or really any artist. Thrice would be an example of a band I’d showcase as providing good diversity while still retaining a solid Christian message.

Or perhaps we just expect too much theology and JPM from artists nowadays…
