Summer is made for one thing, if anything: driving with your windows down and your music cranked. Then again, maybe that’s just me, since my car doesn’t have A/C. Either way, here is some music that, for me, is hitting the spot like a cup of grape Kool-Aid on a hot summer’s day.
Random Access Memories by Daft Punk
I’m not a hardcore Daft Punk fan. I didn’t really get into their music until they did the soundtrack for Tron: Legacy. (If that makes me a “poser” or a some sort of “Johnny-Five-come-lately,” then so be it.)
That being said, I’m really enjoying their new album. It’s danceable, high energy music (“Give Life Back to Music,” “Giorgio by Moroder,” and “Lose Yourself to Dance” mixed with a few relaxing tracks (“The Game of Love”). There is another song from the album that I’m also really enjoying, but the subject matter is, shall we say, “best left to married couples”? So I won’t endorse that track here.
Random Access Memories can be picked up from the iTunes Store and Amazon.com.
Excellent by Propaganda
I don’t know a lot about Propaganda, but he is definitely one of the most unique rapper/poets I’ve heard in a long time. The tracks I’ve been listening to come from his 2012 album Excellent, and they definitely are. Vastly different from Daft Punk—for a lot of reasons—Propaganda’s music is rife with insightful, intelligent lyrics that will pierce you to the depths of your soul. The track “Precious Puritans” is especially pointed in its discussion about the Puritans, their oft-quoted theological brilliance, and their oft-ignored support of slavery and their use of the Bible to support their racist social positions. Challenging, entertaining stuff.
Propaganda’s albums Excellent and Art Ambidextrous are available for free (but you can leave a tip!) on NoiseTrade.com.
Honorable Mention
These songs are great, but I just couldn’t get into the albums. So, they get an honorable mention, but that’s it.
“Spotlight” by Leagues and “The Walker” by Fitz and the Tantrums
