I hate to show my age, but I remember buying DC Talk’s ‘Nu Thang’ album on cassette tape.
That was way before Gotee Records, Jesus Freak and the evolution of tobyMac as a solo artist.
The fact that tobyMac is not only producing, but creating music with an edge, is pretty flippin’ awesome.
Here’s the deets on his latest work:
Eye On It
As I said before, I don’t want to date myself too much, but here I am doing it, again. My teen and pre-teen daughter totally dig tobyMac. So, naturally, when tobyMac’s latest release came out, my wife and I decided we would get them a little “Back to School” present.
The Sound
It’s awesome.
There. I said it.
I’m a little uneasy about being too vocal about it, since this album was suppose to be for them. Sure, they love it. They’re going around the house singing it and playing it all the time.
And me?
Yeah. I’ve been listening to it everyday for the past week.
I was really surprised by this album. There are not very many music artists that can sustain themselves this long and stay on the edge, and it would seem as though tobyMac is one of those artists that can.
You can preview ‘Eye On It’ via Amazon and iTunes. That should give you a pretty good idea of how it sounds. If you’ve liked his previous works–Tonight and Portable Sounds–you’ll dig this. Other than a few songs, this joker is high energy.
The Lyric
The lyrics are nothing but pure honey. A few of the songs have such a powerful message. Another great reminder that Christian music can be a powerful influence in your life, something that seems to be overlooked by some artists. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a ‘JPM’ (Jesus Per Minute) thing, these are big concepts I’m talking about. ‘Forgiveness ‘ with special guest Lecrae and ‘Speak Life’ are two songs that really stand-out in mind.
On a lighter note, Tru Dog is back with a humorous song titled, ‘Mac Daddy.’
The Deluxe Edition
When I went to drop some sweet mulla on this album, I was faced with a decision.
Get it from Amazon or spend the extra bucks and get the Deluxe Edition from iTunes.
The ‘extras’ include a few photos and some other junk not worth mentioning. What is worth mentioning, is the six remixed bonus tracks. Totally worth the extra $3. A few of them have a pretty sweet dub-step feel to them, too.
Conclusion
If you like tobyMac’s recent work, ‘Eye On It’ is a no-brainer.
Get it.
Get it, now.
If you haven’t paid much attention to tobyMac, it may be time you jumped over to Amazon or iTunes and give these new tracks a demo spin or two to see if you like the flavor-flavor.

Extreme Days is one of my favorites by TobyMac…otherwise, I’ve come to realize that while the music is pretty cool…most of the lyrics from both DC Talk and TobyMac are rather shallow. I’d still like to have a copy of the album though.

I gotta say that Tonight is one of my favorite T-Mac songs. I am a runner and I love to start my playlist with this song. It gets my energy flowing and pumps me up for a long run. And I’m with ya on the tape copy of Nu Thang! You gotta love a song called I Luv Rap Music that sounds like a Michael W. Smith/Amy Grant/Steven Curtis Chapman mash-up with some white guy “Rapping”. Great memories!

I like “Burn for You” from Welcome to Diverse City. My wife’s favorite is probably the disco medley that he performs at his concerts.

Gotta say I laughed out loud at “MacDaddy”. As an Apple fan and dad this cracked me up.

his best song is still “Love Is In The House”

I love his track, “Extreme Days.” However, if you’re including old school DC Talk stuff, I’d have to say anything off of their Free At Last album!

I gotta say ” Diverse City” is still my favorite TobyMac song. I do love some of his more recent songs like, ” Portable Sounds (Boomin’ Opers Trip)” and “Get Back Up”, but “Diverse City” is still the best. Also, does anyone else remember TobyMac’s guest appearance on Steven Curtis Chapman’s ” Got to B Tru” on the Great Adventure album? Great stuff!

My favorite Toby Mac song would have to be Tonight with John Cooper. Awesome mix of two different voices/styles.
