It’s The World’s Biggest Pac-Man and it’s still growing!
This is a promotional for the classic gaming publisher, Namco-Bandai, created by an Australian creative agency. An effective one, too!
The reason why The World’s Biggest Pac-Man is growing, is because anyone can create their own level. The newly created level is then connected to the global map. After just a week of its launch, 12,000 levels have been built and almost 300 million dots have been eaten.
That’s a lot of dots.
The project was also tied into Microsfot’s Internet Explorer 9 as an HTML5 project, so if you have it installed, you might consider launching into it with IE9.
Once you begin, you can use a navigator to select where you begin in this very massive map. You can join-in for free and add to the growing number of ghosts that have been eaten – over 3 million, so far!
Being that this massive maze is user generated, there is a fair share of artful and tricky designs, but the number of juvenile submissions have been kept to a minimum.
We’re happy that the [ratio of crude levels to those that aren’t] is well below 1:100 (the standard for user generated campaigns). We’ve been watching the moderation closely, so every [crude level] has a short life. We also suspect the Facebook Connect helps reduce this.
Here’s a maze with MegaMan in mind:
They even provide a link to the Red Cross for those that would like to donate to the Japan Relief efforts.
There’s been a lot of things done right with this project:
- Connects with Social Networking
- Promotes Namco
- Supports charity
- Tech tie with IE9
- Just enough retro mixed with new
There are a lot of aspects going on in a small package. This project pulls in a lot of different technical disciplines, and I think they did an excellent job. Certainly, an example worth following.
