I love reading a book that has me stopping to copy-paste quotes almost every page— it’s enjoyably annoying.
The Irresistible Revolution was one of those books for me and I am really excited to be sharing it with you today.
My Review
For those of you who don’t know, Shane Claiborne is a Christian activist, author, speaker, and an ordinary radical, which means more than anything, that he’s a fighter for love and grace in a world that has too little of both.
So I am a radical in the truest sense of the word: an ordinary radical who wants to get at the root of what it means to love, and to get at the root of what has made such a mess of our world.
-Shane Claiborne
Claiborne shares his journey of questioning the current state of the Church and all of its believers— this journey took him from Baghdad, Iraq to Calcutta, India to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and he shares stories of the people who helped him to believe the things that he does.
We narrowed our vision to this: love God, love people, and follow Jesus.
-Shane Claiborne
It may sound simple, but while reading Claiborne’s book I felt that I went on the journey with him. I felt challenged, inspired, encouraged, uncomfortable even, and most of all, and something that surprised me was how loved by God I felt.
He writes about the God I fell in love with, making me realize how easy that God is to forget when most churches don’t know Him anymore.
Whenever someone tells me they have rejected God, I say, “Tell me about the God you’ve rejected.” And as they describe a God of condemnation, of laws and lightning bolts, of frowning gray-haired people and boring meetings, I usually confess, “I too have rejected that God.” – Shane Claiborne
In this book, you will be invited to live the life of an ordinary radical, a ragumuffin— a life of the grace and love of Jesus.
This book in the words of the author himself is for those who feel “so thirsty for God, so embarrassed by Christianity, and so ready for something more”.
