Kickstarter has become an amazing place for awesome apps and projects–and even up and coming authors!
Take Michael Whitworth for example:
Last year, I released the first book in what I hope will become a series on the entire Bible. As a preaching minister, biblical literacy and spiritual maturity are my passions, but I also believe the Bible should be engaging, not boring. When people read the Bible and books about the Bible, I want them to say it was a “real page-turner; I couldn’t put it down.” I want people to know Scripture so that their lives can be transformed by it. I want them to see Scripture as funny, frightening, weird, convicting. So I’ve thus made it my life’s pursuit to write books that help others better understand the Bible and become more like Jesus. After finishing my first book in this project, “The Epic of God: A Guide to Genesis,” I found myself asking, “What’s next?”
What an awesome concept!
The Church is constantly struggling to gain peoples attention and communicate effectively. The idea of scripture being a, as Michael said, “a real page-turner,” is really cool.
What’s Next
As Michael was asking himself, “What’s next?”, the answer came:
My first child was born a month ago and my wife and I named him “Daniel.” Because of that, I started reading through the Book of Daniel. I was amazed at its profound relevance for the world into which my son was born. We read of four Hebrew young men resolved to honor their Lord. Whether it be the fearlessness of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the Fiery Furnace, or the piety of Daniel praying to God though he knew it to be an illegal act, these stories matter in our world.
But I also found the strange visions of Daniel 7-12 very intriguing. Yes, I think they’re weird. But I also discovered those visions contain a lot of comfort for the persecuted people of God. We might not be able to decipher every symbol, but the overwhelming lesson of each vision is that God is large and in charge, that nothing happens on the world-stage (or in our personal lives, for that matter) that he does not know about.
Michael has placed his writing project on Kickstarter, a great idea I think, and includes a nice set of rewards:
- $8 – ebook version
- $15 – autographed hard copy
- $20 – ebook version and autographed hard copy
- $50 – ebook version, autographed hard copy and advanced release!
- $100 – ebook version, 3 autographed hard copies and your name featured in the Acknowledgments
- $250 – the rewards on this level is pretty long, check it out on the Kickstarter page 😀
Michael’s original goal was $500, but is looking for another $2,000 to guarantee the book’s success. Funds raised will go to writing, editing, design, printing, and distribution costs.
