I think our natural inclination is to read this and to think that programming is definitely an art and a science and we – along with everyone else – want to be proud of our work.
But how many times have we actually ripped someone else’s code, or how many times have we copied and pasted work in production environments? And no, I’m not being dogmatic – this learning that can come from this given the proper context and motivation.
It’s easy because it’s the shortcut but when I think back to some of the best artists and craftsman in history, they were the ones that created completely original, well-designed work. And I’d rather be known in the same way with respect to my craft.
Thoughts?
