The 960 Grid System has been around for sometime – it’s good stuff (and I’ve used it in a number of my own projects), but I also taking a look at what developers and designers are releasing to address some of the common problems they end up solving on a day-to-day basis.
The 978 Grid System is just that.
As more and more whitespace and larger type is finding its way into web design, a slightly wider model has begun to appear across the web. As such, this particular grid system features 12 columns each at 54px with 30px gutters totaling 978 pixels.
Out-of-the-box, 978 pixels should play well with most resolutions no smaller than 1024×768 but as additional features – such as drop shadows – have begun to find their way into modern design trends, the grid system allows a width of up to 1002 pixels in width before displaying a horizontal scrollbar.
Though still relatively new and lacking many of the resources that ship with 960.gs, 978.gs provides a decent alternative based on the nature of your project.
You can follow development, read up on additional information, and download the PSD of the grid on the homepage
