Every tech nerd remembers that exact moment when they find the computer of their dreams. I remember customizing my first desktop machine for college on Dell’s website over ten years ago and more recently getting my MacBook Pro. The laptop was a magical time for me. I was so giddy to go purchase it and single handedly revolutionalize the video editing world with the skills I had yet to develop, create amazing graphics with my amateur and self-taught abilities, and code my way to a self-income website that would make even Google jealous.
Just imagine it, a brand new 17 ince MacBook Pro with a 500 GB hard drive, Apple Care, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and the world at my finger tips. To say I was up all night would be an accurate description. How far could I push this device? What amazing adventures would we go on? What beautiful work can I do for the ministry I am serving with?
Just three days after I bought the laptop, I needed go to a conference where all of the Youth for Christ missionaries were coming to Atlanta from around the world and I just had to take my laptop to show it off. There was no way that it would be separated from me. After a long flight out there, it was late but I had to play around with GarageBand, because I just realized I would be mixing tracks with Kanye West and Lecrae soon.
It’s Bad
As I was getting my bags out of the car to take into my lodge, the inevitable happens. The one side of my strap snaps and my computer bag immediately slams against the black top. It was worse than you can imagine because I had 4 seminary books in the bag too (no wonder the bag broke!) and so that thing was an anvil dropping to earth. I cried out like someone had just cut my hand off and had to see what awful things had happened to my brand new computer.
In the back of my mind, I am processing the future. I did get Apple Care, but that does not cover dropped computers. Shoot! And I bet the books made it worse. Why am I so clumsy? Can this get any worse?
When I opened up the bag, I get the laptop a once over and found that the laptop was miraculously okay. What a relief. That could have been tragic.
It Gets Worse
So, you would think that after such a scary moment I would have learned my lesson. The stuff in the bag is too heave for this bag so I should lighten in. I did not learn. I reattached the bag strap because it was still usable, put it backup on my shoulder and CRASH!, the other side of the strap broke.
SERIOUSLY!
The picture above is the result of damage done. Everything still worked, yet it was jacked up. Now four years later, I am typing on that very computer but recognize the need to be a little more careful.
Sometimes, we need two mistakes to learn… sometimes we need a lot more than that.
Jared Hardwick says
What is crazy is that my laptop, without any drops, has a similar misshape to it. Bent lid corner, angled ethernet port… all this just from normal wear from taking around with me everywhere.
