When traveling in Ireland recently, I came across a Bible unlike any other I’ve ever seen: the Tabloid Bible. I spent a few glorious minutes laughing out loud and being stared at for it in a quaint bookstore in Dublin while reading it.
The whole Tabloid Bible is, true to its title, in tabloid style. British tabloid style, to be clear. I’ve tried to find ‘official’ inside pics, but apparently, they don’t exist (either that or Google wasn’t able to find them, which would surprise me). That means you’ll have to make do with the quick shots I took with my iPhone. At least they give you an idea of just how funny and brilliant this Bible is.
The cover alone made me snicker:
But the rest is equally funny. Take this example of the story of David and Uriah for example:
While worded in the style typical for tabloids, the story does stay true to its Biblical origins. The little sidebar is, of course, a not-so-subtle dig at the British tabloids who got caught wiretapping the phones of several celebrities.
The story of David and Goliath was done in an equally tongue-in-cheek fashion:
The tweets had me laughing out loud for real.
Anyways, this is not an official review as I haven’t actually read the whole thing, but I found it too good not to share. I loved the combination of humor and Biblical truth. I could see myself use this with students especially, to illustrate familiar stories in a lighthearted way.
Sadly, The Tabloid Bible is not widely available in the US (Amazon US does sell it, but only through third party sellers). However, if you’re lucky enough to live in the UK this should be no issue as Amazon UK has The Tabloid Bible in stock.
Is this your style of humor or not?
