We have talked a lot about the newest social media platform on the block, Pinterest, and the accelerated growth that it has received. It has gained notoriety online for its unique take on social media that has attracted a whole new audience that has transformed blogging, e-business, and online networking. But for those that do have Pinterest connected to a website or blog, there is something amazing happening that has not been discussed much, sustained traffic.
Above is a traffic graph from my seventy8 Productions blog based on a single, image-heavy, Pinterest-geared post that we did three weeks ago. Before investing in Pinterest, we would typically see a huge spike through the first day, maybe two, of traffic flow for the article and then it would drop off. If I mentioned it again on Twitter a week or two later, we’d see a smaller spike that would last a day.
But Pinterest is changing all of that for us. Instead of looking for a great day from a single post, we are finding a single post impacting for a month at a time. This has changed everything in terms of a strategy for our website. We want to be effective with the incoming traffic. Twitter brings in great one-day viewers, but in the long run, Pinterest is clearly out doing everyone!
Here are a couple of theories we are currently testing for what can bring in the best traffic for our blog:
- Quality images get more repins and click throughs, thus more traffic.
- Timing is everything. Pinning in the middle of the night in America (the biggest user base) brings less traffic.
- Types of articles/images are directly coorelated.
- Picking the right category for the image is vital.
