This is a question I’ve asked myself many times.
I’ve got plenty of WordPress sites under my belt. Simple sites, complicated sites, I’m certainly no n00b when it comes to the WordPress world…however…you’ll never find my developing a plugin from scratch – yet.
It’s something I’ve wanted to get better at. Not only does WordPress power most of the web, but is something that I really enjoy doing.
But where do I start!?!
Start Here
Srsly.
I’ve taken this online course from Tom McFarlin twice, and I am excited to say, it’s coming soon to an ebook near you! ?
Here’s what it’s all about, in Tom’s words:
“My upcoming eBook does not attempt to provide instructions for how to write code, nor does it walk-through exercises on how to achieve certain things with PHP.
Instead, Start Here is for anyone who has even a little bit of web development experience or someone who has a keen interest in learning about the various tools and software that’s available.”
Start Here Success
Since I’ve finished Start Here, my approach to even the most basic of WordPress development (like customizing themes and functions.php) is so much better. Plus, as I begin to learn more about WordPress development, I’ve established a good foundation that will help me go further. I must also say, that since adopting the practices Tom outlines in Start Here, my entire system of developing custom WordPress sites is much better.
The Start Here ebook will cover:
- development environments,
- source control,
- build tools,
- CSS preprocessors,
- JavaScript linters,
- and more.
Whether you’re a WordPress hobbyist, an aspiring web developer, or a church tech volunteer, you’ll find Start Here to be a valuable resource.

I’ve built my share of church websites using WordPress and I have to say it’s one of my favorite platforms. There are a lot of small things that can help people out without the need to understand code. That’s why I like it, there is such a community of experienced developers that I don’t need to learn everything!
Thanks for sharing this resource, I’ve added it to my shortlist to check out!
