It’s the theme we’ve all been waiting for.
8BIT has released Standard 3!
I’m so excited, I hardly know where to start. Let’s dig in!
Standard 3
Standard 3 has not only been built from the ground-up, it’s running on the same foundational code that Standard for WordPress.com was built on. The same code that was vetted, critiqued, and approved by Automattic. Simply put, it follows WordPress’ best practices.
This isn’t just a new version, this is a new theme. Cleaner, leaner and meaner.
Just look at some of these features:
- Mobile Ready
Using Twitter Bootstrap, Standard 3 will detect mobile devices – both phones and tablets – and display your website / blog in a mobile optimized view. - Child Theme Ready
This is my favorite. Now when you build on Standard, you can update Standard without overwriting your changes! This makes it one of the most robust premium theme frameworks you’ll ever find. - New Bling!
You’ll love the new Activity Tabs, which is all about displaying your most recent posts, most commented posts, most recent comments, and most used tags. There’s also the completely rebranded Influence Widget (formerly Follower Count), which now includes your Facebook Page along with your RSS and Twitter followers. If that wasn’t awesome enough, Standard 3 uses native caching and the strongest failsafe mechanisms, so influence counts / numbers will no longer unpredictably crash to zero when a third party API fails. - SEO 1UP
8BIT hired SEO consultant Joost de Valk to review Standard 3 and implemented almost every one of his suggestions. Standard 3 has the greatest amount of SEO possible in markup without using any additional plugins. - Social Icon Manager
Changing and rearranging your social icons has never been this much fun! - Advertisements/Widgetized Areas
Standard 3 is loaded up with six of them — header, sidebar, between the post content and comments, or in three footer widget columns. All advertisements are managed from within the widget themselves – images are uploaded and linked using the WordPress Media Uploader. AKA: Easy peesy.
You may also be interested to know that:
- It’s WordPress 3.4 Ready
- Has full WordPress API Integration
- Improved Author Profile Management
- Tighter Integration with Documentation
- Policy Templates
It’s a lot to take in, isn’t it?

How do I get the wide child theme?
Eric Dye says
?
Jim says
Is there a child theme I can download that can make the website layout wider (like Frank’s websites)?
Frank Gantz says
Jim, I just saw your question. I originally downloaded from the support forum. I went to check, but do not see it now. Not sure where it went.
Jim says
Any way you could zip the files and share it? Thanks!
