Something that I’m constantly being challenged with is the temptation to always be looking for forward motion technologically – we can quickly forget that mainstays in our technological-economy are still very, very strong.
Brightkite, a simple way to keep your friends up-to-date with what you’re up to, apparently delivers 20 million messages (half are SMS) a month and is growing 19%, on average, per day.
Yikes.
Today Brightkite announced it’s continued growth of it’s Group Text service, moving into Canada. As TechCrunch notes:
For those who are not familiar with the service: Group Text is a free location-based service that works through text messaging, the web, mobile web, and iPhone and iPod touch devices.
The product allows users to text up to 25 people at once – when one person replies, everyone gets the message, so you can go back and forth.
It just keeps growing!
The point here is to not forget that SMS is still a very large, viable, and reasonable investment of your time and resources in terms of ministry and technology.
Is your ministry leveraging SMS? How much (or little)?
Adam Lehman says
I use SMS as the primary way to shift information to teens and parents in our adult ministry. It’s MUCH cheaper than sending out mailers and much easier than phone calls.
Also, it’s a great way for last second changes or reminders.
