I love my Kindle, but I hate having to use that twenty foot long cord (or that ridiculous e-mail system) to manually send non-Amazon ebooks and documents to my reader. (Personally, I love using my Kindle when preaching. It’s a pain to have to plug it in every time I want to update my sermon.)
Well, we’re all one step closer to the wireless future we’ve been dreaming about. Amazon has just announced a new Mac/PC app that will send ebooks/files to your Kindle wirelessly.
Hooray!
Send to Kindle
The simply named “Send to Kindle” offers some pretty nice features:
- Drag-and-drop with automatic title/author detection.
- The option to select which device (Kindle or iPhone) should receive the file; plus, you can choose to archive the file in the your Amazon Kindle account.
- And what I love the best: contextual menu support. Just right-click and select “Send to Kindle.”
The app can be downloaded and installed within seconds, and the initial setup/registration is quick and painless. I downloaded the app as soon as I found out about it and began to test it soon after. First, I sent a .mobi file to my Kindle Keyboard (née Kindle 3). I waited approximately ten minutes and then manually had my Kindle “Sync & Check for Items.” My .mobi promptly downloaded. Next, I tried a .docx file. This time, I only waited about five minutes before manually checking for new items. Boom. The file downloaded, and it was even nicely formatted!
The only thing that I wish Amazon would have done—I know, I expect a lot from a FREE app—would have been full Kindle management. The web interface is fairly lame. Plus, it doesn’t support the creation or maintenance of collections, which I use to keep my Kindle tidy.
Have you tried Send to Kindle? Do you like it? What’s it missing, if anything?
Download Send to Kindle if you haven’t already.

Doesn’t look like it works with the Kindle Fire, though >:(

That certainly stinks. I can’t imagine that this won’t be corrected soon.
