Scriptive is an iPhone-only app designed to help individuals find Scripture verses that match their emotional tone (positive or negative) and then direct their attention to God. I love the idea of this app because I have struggled with depression and negative emotions for years. There have been many times when I could have used a verse tailor to my emotional state. That’s not to say that a mere drop of scripture can stave away the storm clouds of depression, but it can certainly help.
And those who are up and feeling great? Then this app is still for you because you still need to give God praise for being on that mountaintop. (See Isaiah 42:11 for confirmation of that.)
The Good
The app is easy to use, visually based, and simple. As long as you can express your emotional state in words or pictures, you can use Scriptive.
I don’t know what else to say about the app because it’s just so darn simple and yet profound. I asked my wife, professional feeler, to use the app, and she found it very helpful in her devotional time.
Maybe I’ll say this: more and more, mental health is an issue that churches and individual Christians must face. Scriptive isn’t going to solve that problem—no app could—but it definitely is a step in the right direction because it actually addresses the issue.
The Bad
Scriptive does have a component where you can login, but my wife had some issues with it. I didn’t, but I did have a few scripture results that didn’t make much sense or seemed to be more in line with a simple concordance search but that was a limited issue. That said, you can give a verse a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” to help Scriptive improve it’s searching.
Wrapping Up
That’s it, folks. Do you want to better connect your emotional and spiritual help? Scriptive is a great first step. Is it perfect? No, but it’s good, effective, and free!
