This is cool – Ryan LeFevre, a software engineer for TwitPic, is currently working his way through the Programming Ruby 1.9 book. And in order to get a deeper grasp on the language, he’s been developing his own project.
The result is a Dropbox clone that can be self-hosted and that’s written entirely in Ruby.
RubyDrop is still early in development and is currently only available for Unix/Linux-based systems, but I dig the idea and motivation behind it.
At a high-level, the application comes bundled with its own TCP sever and uses Git as a backend.
As the project matures, I could see this as a totally viable alternative for organizations that would love to host their own file synchronization servers on their own systems without relying on a third-party company.
Browse the code for yourself on GitHub or check out Ryan’s blog for me info.
