Most people collect something. For me, it’s action figures, pens, and, of course, notebooks! I’ve had the good fortune to review a few for ChurchMag, and now, I’m very pleased to bring you a review of Rite in the Rain notebooks.
I was sent a sample set of #271FX-M notebooks, and I have spent the last month or so road testing two of them, one blue and one yellow.
The blue notebook was the first one I grabbed, and it has been through the wringer! Literally, this notebook got washed! My wife, a blessed woman, wanted to bless me by doing the laundry. Sadly, she didn’t know about my EDC habit of putting a notebook in my back pocket. Thus, I was left with a soggy notebook and a ruined pair of khakis. I let that notebook dry and continued to use it, hence its very distressed look in these photos. Needless to say, I was impressed that the notebook survived the washer, intact. I mean, the company is called “Rite in the Rain,” not flood!
But I started using the yellow the same week. I wanted to see if the washer and the detergent in it would affect the paper. I think it’s safe to say that there was no discernible issue. Furthermore, I just want to go back over the fact that it survived a full wash cycle and, after drying, has been carried with me in my pocket every day since. That’s really impressive!
I conducted a non-scientific but fairly objective series of pen tests upon these notebooks, though I could have saved myself some time by reading the instruction on the inside of the notebook! There’s a very hand list on the inside of the notebook that would have been useful had I been attentive. Of course, you can just watch this video and make it even easier!
Here are the images from my pen tests. The first image is the blue book—the test was conducted post-wash. The second is from the yellow book.
As you can tell from the images, there are some pens that do better than others, totally in keeping with what RitR reports about its own product. So, boiling it down to stars, how do these books rank in terms of durability, affordability, and enjoyability?
– Durability (5.0)
– Affordability (4.0) – It’s an elite brand, so it is a bit pricey.
– Enjoyability (5.0)
Recommended: Yes! In fact, after I use up my current queue of journals, I do believe I’ll be getting a RitR journal.
In closing, I am thoroughly enjoying my Rite in the Rain notebooks. I hadn’t EDC-ed a pocket notebook in years, and I’m happy to be back in the habit now that I’ve found a brand that can survive me.
I was given several sample notebooks by Rite in the Rain for the purpose of writing an honest review, which is what you just read.
If you have a notebook you’d like Phil to review, you can send him an email.
