“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
Martin Luther King Jr.
We will be reading through Nehemiah 4:1-9
Nehemiah has sweated out the planning of the material for the wall, the traveling to a whole new area he had not been for years, and beginning to fulfill the dreams God had imparted on him with efficiency. At this point, things are smooth sailing, maybe too smooth.
The enemies of God’s nation were shocked at Nehemiah’s actions and began to taunt and mock him. Things were certainly getting heated and he needed to make the necessary precautions.
This happens in church tech, doesn’t it? It would be great to go and get the best tech for your church to do the greatest ministry, but church leadership may balk at the idea. It would be great to incorporate something like Snapchat to tell a story well and impact teenagers and college students alike, but for parents who have heard the horror stories about the app and make themselves known. It would be great to have effective time with our training just on how to produce Sundays well, but the spiritual health of our volunteers means we need to invest in them personally.
So how do we succeed? How do we ward off the attacks that come from outside, but also from within? We have to plan, prepare, and be on guard. Nehemiah was sold on God’s vision and sold others on it as well. So asking them to put in extra time for guard duty was obvious. If we have done the hard work in previous chapters of this devotional, we already have people on board. So asking them to join a discipleship or small group, go to additional training, and any other additional responsibilities for the sake of the mission is a small step to ensure the ministry continues strong.
