“Of all spiritual disciplines prayer is the most central because it ushers us into perpetual communion with the Father.”
Richard Foster
We will be reading through Nehemiah 1:5-11
We ended the last devotional with Nehemiah grieving. In this mourning, Nehemiah does what comes natural for the things that pain his heart: he bends down to his knees and prays. The prayer is simple, but powerful. It shows both Nehemiah’s character that plays out in the rest of the text, as well as the foundation for his strength that comes from the Lord.
I don’t want to rush past this prayer because what Nehemiah does now is setting the stage for Jesus to come and bring salvation to the world within the New Testament. Literally, his time spent budgeting, planning, and executing the strategy has a direct and immediate payout towards our Messiah coming to earth.
Nehemiah asks for the counsel of God in the calling that he has received from Him. Further, Nehemiah seeks God to move ahead of him in this mission towards success that he knows will not be fulfilled without God. Finally, Nehemiah knows his quest starts with the king to whom he is the cupbearer, to ask a favor which no rational man would ask.
Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.” I was cupbearer to the king.
Nehemiah 1:11
As a church technology team member, you may have signed up with the ministry because you wanted to run the camera, someone asked you to join, or you had a couple of spare hours to serve and this was the best time to do it. Now, you are all in with this ministry and want to serve in a different or greater capacity, but don’t know how to move forward. You know God is calling you, but your practical path isn’t clear. Or maybe it’s the opposite and you know you need to serve, but where you are at right now is not working.
My response to that situation: pray. Just as He did for Nehemiah, God will give you a passion. He intends for you to rely on Him as you do your best in the ministry ahead of you. Keep serving well, as great things are to come.
