I don’t know how many times my family searches for a family-friendly show or movie to watch together, only to find nothing. Granted my youngest sibling and I have a decade of difference between our ages so that probably doesn’t help, but we recently discovered a show on Netflix that the whole family has completely loved so far. It’s called Raising Dion.
The Story
Raising Dion is a show based on the brilliant comic book and short-film created by Dennis Liu.
It tells the story of Nicole, a widowed African-American mom, and her eight-year-old son Dion with superpowers, as they navigate living without Mark, father, and husband to them, and scientist to the rest of the world.
Dion is like a baby Avenger— yes, he’s as adorable and magical as you are imagining. And I wouldn’t say Nicole doesn’t have superpowers, because she’s a mom and we all know they’re superheroes in disguise.
You see how they tackle the everyday life of a normal mom and LEGO-loving-son, making it relatable to children and parents alike. Eight-year-olds are a handful already, am I right? This show depicts both the challenges and beauty that they discover as her eight-year-old slowly realizes that he has magical abilities.
You also see some of the more specific challenges that the parent of an African-American child faces, and I especially appreciated the raw, honest, reality of what that looks like.
What I Like
I like that this show has drawn everyone in my family in, something that hasn’t happened in a long time. The story is really amazing, the casting was genius, and the humor, action, and heartwarming scenes appealed to all of us.
What I Dislike
That we’re almost done with the first season and we’re going to have to wait for the next one.
Conclusion
The world is a mess right now and we all wish that superheroes like Dion or the Avengers were real. Watching this show made me think of the fact that the world is always in need of superheroes and somehow that’s comforting to me. Right now, everyone needs to be one.
And it’s going to look different for everyone, whether it’s working in a hospital on the front lines, stocking shelves in a supermarket for people, or social distancing on the couch while watching Raising Dion. We have a chance to help save the world so let’s do that.
By the way, you can watch it here on Netflix.
Have you watched Raising Dion yet? What new movie or show have you watched recently and enjoyed? I’d love to hear your suggestions!
