If you are looking for an app for Mac OS X that is great for video and slides, as well as audio, it’s time to give QLab a try.
QLab is an award-winning piece of software that you can use to create multimedia designs for live performances and installations. It gives you the control you need for audio, video and MIDI, from one place.
Best of all, the basic version of QLab is free. So, not only can you give QLab a run through some paces before jumping for a license, but you may find the free version meets all your needs. Plus, it makes a great resource for Churches!
QLab has been designed to be intuitive. It’s all about the click, drag and drop, you won’t be spending all your time hunting through sub-menus. As a DAW editor myself, I can appreciate the fact that QLab lets you undo, anything.
As for latency, they’ve got you covered:
QLab uses Apple’s low latency CoreAudio framework to provide playback control accurate to a thousandth of a second. QLab can also guarantee sample-accurate audio and video synchronization across all the cues in your workspace. And by taking advantage of Apple’s Quartz Composer technology, QLab allows you to completely customize video rendering in each cue, applying image filters and more.
Mmmm … that sounds so pretty.
Here are some of QLab’s features:
- 48 independent channels of audio output per cue.
- Sample-accurate synchronization of audio and video.
- Full screen or custom video geometry.
- Camera Cue for live video feeds.
- Real-time video animations.
- Completely customizable fade curves.
- Easily send all MIDI Voice, MIDI Show Control messages.
- Sync to incoming timecode (MTC or LTC).
- Independent matrix mixer for every cue.
- Dead-easy vamping.
- Full application scripting support.
- Unlimited undo for any change.
- More!
If you fall in love with QLab as you’re experiencing the free version, don’t worry, QLab is priced well and has some good package options. Download the free version of QLab and give it a try!

I’ve actually used QLab (the free version) to manage a bunch of audio cues/effects for dramas during Vacation Bible School. It worked great and was easy to use with minimal learning curve. I would highly echo the recommendation to check it out.

Awesome! There’s nothing better than hearing it straight from those who have used it!

We’ve used QLab for lots of applications. We bought the full Pro bundle and love it. The most intense thing we used QLab for involved triggering audio tracks which the band played along with, videos, and sending MIDI commands to trigger control of our ETC Congo lighting console for a special song for weekend services.
QLab is the stuff!
