Recently Eric told me I should chill out more and perhaps try playing some more games. It was good advice and I’ve been taking it well. Time off is very important for your long term mental health and productivity.
With that in mind, I’ve been keeping an eye out for a good game to get into, especially one on iOS as it is my main computing platform. I tried a few different options, but nothing really seemed to stick until I came across PewDiePie Tuber Simulator.
What is PewDiePie Tuber Simulator
Apparently this PewDiePie is kind of a big deal on YouTube (just the largest following and over 47 million subscribers), but I’ve never actually watched any of his videos (still true), so i can’t speak to anything of the character behind the game (apparently he swears, but I’ve not seen any of that in the game). As someone of such YouTube success, it’s no surprise he knows a thing or two about making YouTube videos…so he’s made a game where you pretend to be a YouTuber (sorry Tuber…there’s no YouTube in this for trademark reasons), make videos, get new gear and advance your career.
The Good
The game is really addictive (as all good mobile games should be) so that’s a good point…and a word of warning. The dynamics of the game are fairly simple. You make videos on different topics. You earn experience as you make videos on these different topics and the more experience you have, the more views your videos get. At the end of your videos, you get subscribers. You can buy gear and that will help you level up and earn more views with your videos.
That’s the basics, there are a few extra little things here and there that add more fun to the game. It reminds me a lot of indie video game developer, in that you have to level up and make items on trends. It also makes me wish that making youtube videos was as easy as simply clicking a button!
One of the best parts of the game is the clever way it uses ads. The game is free but you can watch adds to earn power ups and rewards which get you more points. This helps fund the game and helps you advance quicker (ironically most of the ads are for free with in app purchase games).
The Bad
The game isn’t complex, its a simple click, earn points, and buy. There’s really not much skill so I don’t know how long the playability of the game really lasts. At the moment I find it fun and intriguing but I suspect that will stop suddenly at some point.
I have also had the game crash on a couple of occasions but that may say more about my aging iPad than the game itself.
Wrapping Up
If you’ve always wanted to run a YouTube media empire (but are rubbish at making videos) then this is clearly the game for you. The monetizing policy is great and it’s full of fun and whimsy.
