Quick on the heels of announcing a social media hiatus Pastor Mark Driscoll has given “jumping the shark” a whole new meaning.
As the founding pastor of Mars Hill Church in Seattle and father of 17 children, Driscoll is shifting the focus of his life toward the rich past of the Church. A consummate family man and brimstone preacher, Driscoll confessed to feeling the weight of responsibility and leaving a legacy for his growing brood.
And what Christian institution has withstood the test of time and left a more enduring legacy than the Roman Catholic Church.
That’s right, ladies and gentleman, Pastor Mark is trading in his reformed beard and hipster vest for burning incense and Hail Marys.
This news caused no small measure of uproar from saints and sinners alike, but Pope Francis was quick to welcome Driscoll with open arms.
Almost.
Usually a pinnacle of compassion and unconditional grace, Pope Francis did enact one stipulation before accepting the Protestant poster child into the Catholic faith: Driscoll must sell all his MMA Affliction t-shirts on eBay and donate the proceeds to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Not to be deterred Pastor Mark complied and all the t-shirts sold out in minutes thanks to eBay’s “Buy Now” feature.
While a St. Jude representative refused to comment on the total value of the donation, it is widely believed to be substantial. Especially considering the recent St. Jude press release inviting people to attend a ground breaking ceremony of the new “Driscoll Wing” dedicated to reconstructing the broken bones and dreams of failed MMA fighters.
Only time will tell how long this drastic conversion will last, but rumor has it Driscoll already challenged the Pope to an arm wrestle.
You would you bet on winning the arm wrestle: Driscoll or Pope Francis?
If St. Jude built a new wing in your honor what healing should it focus on?
