I first encountered Jim Carrey like many as the main character in Pet Detective, Liar Liar, Batman Forever etc. The last few years he seems to be focusing on painting as a form of expression. In this short documentary he expresses his relationship with art. Then, around the 4:15 mark speaks about painting Jesus. The simple, yet profound statements he makes are something to not only ponder but bring into our practice in church tech and creativity.
God gives us the ability to be creative. And, creativity is not just about being ‘artistic’. It is more than painting, sculpturing, singing, quilts and sketches. You can be creative as you work with code for your church app or website. Creativity and innovating transcends one form of expression. And, with that in mind…
My Highlights / Key Take Aways On Painting Jesus
Nurture
Our creativity needs to be nurtured. This is something we must constantly practice. Honing our skills not only allows to feel fulfilled but brings out the best in us. And, we give best to our community of faith and the world when we become and do what we’re wired to do or for.
We all have different gifts and we need to do our best to bring them to the fore. Jesus said it well. What good is light when it is hidden? After all, gifts are for giving. Our gifts are not for ourselves but the world.
Seeing Jesus
Regardless of what we create as churches, creatives and techies, the ultimate goal is painting Jesus. It is about making him visible, clearer. When you write a song, develop a sermon series, build an app or website or whatever you do, we need to keep asking ourselves, “Is this painting Jesus and making Him that much clearer for others?”
All we do is about making Him accessible to all people.
You Painting Jesus
So, what’s your art? What’s your canvas? What are your tools? How do you paint Jesu? What’s getting in the way of you freely doing it?
May we have courage to use our art, whatever it is, to tell a clear story, and create vivid paintings Jesus and His love. May you paint Jesus well.
Selah.
