Its always a good way to start a conference off with a session about blogging, and that’s exactly what one of the first breakouts at The Orange Conference featured.
John Saddington and Tom Shefchunas led out a session about how to launch a blog and have fun doing it.
As blogging continues to gain more momentum, the question has been continually asked by individuals “how can we leverage this momentum?” John and Tom gave a very simple answer… just start.
There were three questions that they encouraged the audience to consider when starting a blog:
1. Who Do I Want to Reach?
This was one of the obvious questions but the catch here was that the more specific you could be the more effective you will become. For example, the strategy is much more like a “sniper rifle” than a “shot gun” approach where you might dilute your efforts, time, and resources.
Be specific!
2. What Type of Content Are You Going to Create?
Be specific in this area as well. What is the content that you’re going to create? How much and how long?
Consistency is key!
3. Is a Blog the Answer?
Sometimes you just need to ask the right questions; at times, the “hard” ones as well. After reviewing your audience and the content that you’re interested in creating, is a “blog” the right communication channel and vehicle? Perhaps not!
Be honest; you have limited time and resources! Don’t waste it in areas that won’t help you be effective.
Martin Hathaway says
In principle, I agree with the “consistency is key” argument. However, I would like to reassure people that variety can also be a good thing. Once the blog’s primary voice has been established, I would encourage bloggers to vary writing styles and post lengths, from time to time.
