It was time to re-up the computer equipment in my church’s media department, so we sprung for the quadcore iMac. I have been using a 15″ Macbook Pro, so I’m already feeling a productivity boost in screen real estate alone.
After about 5 hours, our *poor man’s* benchmarks included:
- Live Capturing SD footage in Final Cut Pro via firewire
- Installing iWork on the machine
- Copying HD footage from an SD card into a finder folder
- Tweeting about the entire experience
The kicker is that all of these things were happening at the same time, and it didn’t even break a sweat. My old Macbook Pro would’ve ground to a screeching halt if you picked any two from that list. So, I’m pretty stoked!
Pictures after the jump!
What about you? When was your last upgrade? And did your work flow improve?
Matthew Snider says
Unfortunately our church uses PCs and they are old as dirt. We have had a blue screen happen in the middle of a service once!
Got to love inferior hardware AND software lol.
Andrew Mason says
Definitely. We started back in the day with Windows Movie Maker & my dad’s camcorder. I know we want to be excellent….but a few frozen DVD’s & a coupla hiccupped videos later, I realized it’s not the end of the world 🙂

I am jealous, very very jealous. But congrats on a nice upgrade.
It reminds me of a couple of summers ago when I worked at a church doing video in Final Cut and graphic design in Photoshop with a macbook that had 512 of ram…not fun at all.
When I upgraded to 2gigs of ram, it was a good day.
My latest upgrade, and this is lame compared to yours, is a magic mouse. I have had my mighty mouse for a couple of years and I constantly had to mess with it. It pretty much didn’t scroll and often times didn’t connect, so I was happy to make that switch.
Chris Ames says
Sweet! So no cramping yet?
Kyle Reed says
ha, ya not yet. I would have went with your link but I couldn’t wait that long, I am impatient. so I will deal with the cramps 🙂

Upgraded to production premium cs5 😀
Eric J says
ohh and my workflow did improve.
Andrew Mason says
NICE. Heck yeah it did. 😉
Although, I’ll be honest, I hadn’t had the chance to dive too deep with CS5 yet. Any killer new features?
Eric J says
Well the lack of transcoding before editing is very nice for Premiere Pro, also the photoshop selective fill is very very nice.
Chris says
Last upgrade to PC was about 3 years ago and it definitely improved my work flow, but now it is definitely time for another upgrade.
Saving up to get the quadcore iMac myself so I’ve still got a few months. It will be glorious day!
