After posting these 6 online church membership training apps, one of our awesome ChurchMag readers emailed me with some Open Source online church membership training systems that he had some experience with.
LCMS’ (Learning Content Management System) can be a great tool for new membership training, especially for large, multisite churches.
Here’s an overview of some Open Source LCMS systems you may want to consider:
ATutor
As with most niche, open source projects, you’re not going to find a lot of polish we these apps. You’ll also want to make sure you have someone who has the tech knowledge to get you launched with this (and other) Open Source LCMSs.
ATutor is completely web based and can be used like any other LCMS, used to develop and deliver online courses. It also has a great selection of add-ons and is fairly easy to get up and running.

Clarion
Clarion uses PHP and MySQL to get the job done. This Open Source eLearning platform is designed for teachers to build online courses and manage learning and collaborative activities—completely online. Built by a French developer, you may sometimes find the support difficult to understand at times. But, hey, it’s Open Source!

Dokeos
Not only does Dokeos run well on tablets (a huge plus), it provides all the features you’ll ned to develop e-learning and blended learning management. Authoring? Reporting? Yeah. This one is a favorite.

Moodle
Moodle is your most widely available LCMS. In fact, if you check your cPanel, you’ll more than likely find it as a Fantastico quick install, making it the easiest to get up and running of all four systems.

Conclusion
Be sure to explore each of your options, looking at the available documentation, server requirements and as silly and shallow as it may sound, screenshots. The fact is, the person setting up an Open Source LCMS is not the person that will be using it the most. A tool like this is worthless if the users have a hard time using it or it doesn’t met the demands for your online church membership training or whatever other uses you may need it for.
Have you used any of these systems?
