Just about everyone who reads ChurchMag knows what Open Source is.
Denoting software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed with or without modification
What if the Church was Open Source?
Shouldn’t the Church be Open Source?
I don’t mean only tech related sources, either.
I’m talking about everything:
- Graphics
- Curriculum
- Training materials
- Videos
- Administrative tools
- Software
- More!
Take a look at this infographic from Open Church:

Open Church is a new project that plans to launch later this year.
By partnering with 500 partners (at $31 per month), Open Church plans to make this idea, a reality.

Of course! And glad to see you getting on board with this idea! Take a look at Feautor.org, which is a global, multi-lingual site for sharing religious resources — it’s been attempting to do “open source” resource sharing for a while now.

Great link share, thanks!

I can’t believe I’m just now hearing about Open Church, and I have to say that I’m excited to death about it. So much so, actually, that I’m going to share your blog post with my fellow children’s ministers and leaders at my church and see if they’re interested in partnering up. Thank you for sharing this invaluable information!

I think this is so awesome. It has always baffled me why the church doesn’t give away more of it’s content to help grow and strengthen the body as a whole. I can understand some thing needs to be charged for because of overhead etc but there are a ton of distribution mediums out there which are in-expensive and even free where this ocean of knowledge can be handed to and provided to those wanting to take it in. Nothing rubs me more then attending a class and getting handouts which make it impossible for me to share the knowledge with anyone unless i verbally tell them or use other “nefarious” means. Imagine if Paul would have place a copy write on his letters, or Jesus would have patented the idea of forgiveness, grace or love. It’s no one God chose the time he did for all this to happen because if Jesus would have showed up today and tried to do what he did someone would have found a way to make it so you had to pay to get any of it…..

Great stuff, Eric.

I know that Open Source != free (as in $$) but why is open church $31 a month?
Eric Ryan Jones says
You aren’t buying access to open church instead your funding open church so they can do what they desire, which is provide everything for free to everyone. But in order to do this they need capital to run the show. Just like wikipedia every year does a massive fund raiser to keep things free i’m guessing open church will do the same.
Eric J says
Thanks for the reply Eric that helped a lot.
Eric Ryan Jones says
No problem man, we Eric J’s need too stick together 🙂
Eric Dye says
True (I’m a little uncomfortable with all of these Eric’s in one place. Is this even safe!?!).
Eric J says
once we amass enough erics at churchmag we’ll be able to take over and rename it ericmag!
Eric Dye says
I am so thinking the same thing.
