Intranets – sometimes I find myself in a strange love-hate relationship with them.
I’ve seen a few really good ones and then so many poor ones that have made me cry with frustration and disgust.
Ah.
My hope is that most ministries that do, in fact, have intranet portals are using them well and effectively! If you don’t and if you’ve been considering creating one, why not try this one on for size?
Enter OpenAtrium!
I personally demo’d this to my staff a few months back as a possible alternative to an intranet need and I was very impressed with what I was able to present.
It’s open source, for starters, and built off of Drupal which means it was super easy to install and get up and running.
It includes features such as blogs, calendars, group dashboards, documents, shout boxes, case trackers, and more, and features a good administrative back-end as well.
Check out these demo vids for a quick overview:

I’ve used Open Atrium since it was first released and it has been absolutely fantastic. My only wish is that it was as easy to update as WordPress. Other than that, it is the perfect FREE open source project management web app.

Wow rave reviews…We are restructuring our server set-up, I’ll have to look into using something like this for sure!
Our staff has grown from 3 to ~12 in the past 18 months, so we’re still catching up technologically.
In fact any ChurchIt readers who live in the 10-30 staff world, I would *love* to pick your brain on what tech stuff has worked for ya’ll.

Drupal might be one of the most frustrating CMSes ever. But I still love it. 🙂

Open Atrium is a great resource for project/team management. But as a heads up to other readers, it can get a bit (or a lot) cpu-hungry. If you expect much traffic, I definitely recommend setting this up on an alternative stack like nginx or at least using some kind of PHP cache like APC.
