There are many funky jQuery based images sliders/slideshows out there.
One of the best, and my personal favourite, is now also a WordPress plugin and the developer has now also launched a new and rather interesting paid version.
Nivo Slider is a very slick and stylish jQuery image slider with 16 transitions (not just you fade or slide!), ‘dot’ and thumbnail navigation options, HTML captions and it comes with three themes. It’s also only 15kb when packed.
I love it so much, I even use it on my own site!
Its WordPress plugin is very nice and simple to use. You can have multiple sliders and add them to posts/pages via a shortcode.
The jQuery plugin is released free under the MIT license, and the WordPress (single site) plugin is $20. Nivo Slider’s developer has just started offering a ‘Pro’ option where, for $10 a month, where you get:
- Private Priority Support
- Unlimited WordPress Plugin Licenses
- You can use WordPress plugin in Premium Themes (handy if you’re a theme developer)
- Free Updates Forever
- Automatic Updates
I’m not sure I’ll get a pro license for it, but it’s a very interesting way of offering a slider/plugin.
What do you think of this way of offering a script?
Do you have a favourite slider/slideshow script?

I would caution folks who use this slider. Yes, it’s seemingly awesome, but as a freelance web designer, I’ve had several requests this year for something kooky going on with this slider, and contacting them for support was no help.
I will say though, it was always the Nivo Slider that came bundled with some theme.
Darn you, WordPress. For all your greatness, you definitely have some flaws.

Thanks for dropping your knowledge, Micah. We all appreciate it!

Thanks Micah – a handy warning. I’ve had many other js related issues with things that come with themes – why I always role my own these days 😉
I’d guess they’re bundling an old version that doesn’t like more recent versions of jQuery that WP uses. (or they’re not calling jQuery properly or something) I guess it proves how popular this slider is!!! (shame the support wasn’t good – I guess that’s one of the benefits of going pro…)
But I’ve never had any issues when I’ve used it by coding it in myself!

I’ve also had issues with this plugin not playing nice with other WordPress plugins.
I’m using Mathew Ruddy’s Easing Sliders. There’s a free version and a premium version band both are excellent. I’m using them on a few diff sites.
