The guys over at Google are always looking for the next way to improve Gmail.
It has come a long way.
They’ve recently updated their look again, giving it more of a minimalist feel but allowing people to use new HD themes if they want to go that way. The change has also been rolled out for Google Apps users. However, if you work at an org that uses Google Apps, your administrator will have to turn on the ability to make the change.
Here are some of the highlights of the new look:
A Cleaner, More Modern Look
New Themes
Customizable
Switch Between Mail, Contacts and Tasks

What do you think about the new look?
Jeremy Smith says
I love the consistency between apps, but hate that it is hard to distinguish between emails on the frontpage… not my favorite.
Jay Caruso says
That’s where labels come in real handy.
James Cooper says
I really like it. I’ve been using the new ‘preview’ theme for a while anyway so the change hasn’t been that much!
I’ve also got several accounts and use a different theme for each of them. I love the new HD desk theme – looks great side by side with wunderlist running its wood theme!
Eric Dye says
You’re so nature. 🙂
Jay Caruso says
I’ve been using that theme as well. It was nice however to apply the look to my Google Apps accounts as well.
Jared Erickson says
digging it, may actually use the web interface instead of a third party mail app now
Jay Caruso says
Whoa. that’s a bold step. I am still waiting for the package that gives me mail and a calendar in one that isn’t titled “Outlook.”
Mark says
Wow, People still do that?
Eric J says
Gmails new interface is great, i’m having a bit more trouble with readers re-design.
Jay Caruso says
Yeah I’ve heard some very vocal complains about reader.
Eric j says
The biggest frustration for me is that the lInks are grey on a white background instead of blue.
Mark says
i love it, wish they’d bring the density control to reader
Jay Caruso says
Density control rules. I went with ‘cozy’ myself.
Mark says
As did I
Eric Dye says
I’m lovin’ it, and agree with @Mark.
Ruben Nuñez says
Its growing on me. Initially it was frustrating due to the colors blending in to each other. I like that they simplified and reduced steps in the function of the email as well. For example, to erase spam its note only a 1 step process. Before it was 2.
Stuart says
I can’t stand it.
It’s too open and the differentiation between sections is so vague as to be misleading. I don’t like how chained email looks, or how the labels auto-expand, or that the icons disappear, or that they aren’t labelled and some icons are so bland I end up thinking ‘meh’, and so on, etc.
I really don’t like it and as for google reader, it is just plain horrible.
What’s wrong with them offering both new and old – it isn’t as if they can’t do that and let folks pick the one they like.
