As an ESTJ, I am all about efficiency.
I don’t like to waste time, I like to maximize, my motto is: work hard, play hard.
So seeing a TED Talk title like “Why you should make useless things” really caught my eye.
“Why would you want to do that?”, I thought.
Let’s have the very cool Simone Giertz tell us:

If you’ve never heard or seen her before, you should really check out Simone Giertz’s YouTube channel.
She’s not only witty and funny but extremely inspiring.
If you love robots and robotics (like myself), you’ll want to subscribe.
Conclusion
For some of us, being “foolish” or doing things “just for fun” comes naturally. For others, like myself, you have to try a little harder at this. You have to be more intentional about it.
And making something useless doesn’t have to be a robot or machine. Simone’s concept applies across all building blocks. From LEGO to Javascript, to servos and woodworking, all are worthwhile pursuits of making something useless.
So if you’re someone like Simone and like to make useless things — keep it up and keep being awesome!
And for the rest of you — who spend more time acting like a robot instead of thinking about building one — maybe it’s time you started by making something useless.
