For both web and print design, Lorem Ipsum is the standby way of dropping in text and copy for your design and layout.
That’s great for text, but what about images?
I know some designers who have a batch or set of images they routinely use to drop into their mock-ups. However, there’s an easier and better solution that includes a few different options that designers should love.
lorempixum
These placeholder images can be used in both web and print design.
The concept is simple, and the result is brilliant!
Let’s say you need a 400×200 image. Simply drop-in this line of code:
<img src=”http://lorempixum.com/400/200″ />
This will automatically retrieve the image. If you are going to be showing-off amock-up without a web connection, you can also easily download manually generated images.
Here are some other options:
- http://lorempixum.com/400/200 – to get a random picture of 400 x 200 pixels
- http://lorempixum.com/g/400/200 – to get a random b/w picture of 400 x 200 pixels
- http://lorempixum.com/400/200/sports – to get a random picture of the sports category
- http://lorempixum.com/400/200/sports/1 – to get picture no. 1/10 from the sports category
- http://lorempixum.com/400/200/sports/Dummy-Text – …with a custom text on the random Picture
- http://lorempixum.com/400/200/sports/1/Dummy-Text – …with a custom text on the selected Picture
The picture categories include:
- Abstract
- Food
- People
- Technics
- Animals
- Nightlife
- Nature
- Transport
- City
- Fashion
- Sports
All pictures can be in either full color or b/w.
With these kind of options, you can be sure your random images match or fit-in with whatever you’re trying to mock-up.
You can drop these in manually, or you can use the placeholder generator:
This is a very cool tool.
I’ll be bookmarking this for sure!

Reminds me of http://dummyimage.com but I can see how you might want to see actual photos instead of just a placeholder gray/black box with text. Nice find.

It’s pretty awesome.
