If you are into photography, then understanding how light works is incredibly valuable. As J.P Morgan says in this video below, “your camera isn’t your tool, light is your tool.” So that’s why this video is so useful (for beginners and those who are experienced as a refresher and reminder).
In this video, the host of the slanted lens explains the fundamental principles of light and how they affect your images. This will help you get the image you want out of your head and into the SD card (or film if you like that).
J.P Morgan uses a sphere as it is a good, simple tool to represent a person’s head. He then shows you the effects of different forms of light on the sphere and the five elements caused by ALL light. Check out the video below.

I found the breakdown of the elements of light to be very useful. Although I’ve heard of the different effects of hard and soft light, seeing the different elements and how they change with different light sources made me look at them in a different way. I also loved a couple of J.P.’s quotes including:
“Photography is a tow dimensional experience in a three dimensional world”
(my photography mentor had told me this before and it’s a great reminder.)
“Your camera isn’t your tool, light is your tool.”
This is the first video in a series so keep tuned to J.P.’s YouTube channel if you’d like to learn more about the Laws of Light.
Now I just need to convince my wife to let me buy a softbox (or two) and some more speedlights… How hard can that be?
