Recently I was trying to help my folks out with a technology issue (something I’m sure many of you are familiar with). As they described the issue, I wasn’t exactly sure what they were doing and they didn’t have the words to fully express the idea. However, I had an idea, maybe they could show me what the issue was so I could tell them how to solve the problem.

Conducting Google searches from your desktop isn’t anything new. I remember doing this with Google Desktop…do you remember Google Desktop? (I miss desktop widgets sometimes).
Now you can do it in Windows, OS X, Ubuntu, etc… It’s all baked into your OS.
But what if you could level up your search? Maybe reduce a few clicks? Especially if you find yourself making the same kind of Google Searches over and over!
Then you might be ready to become a search ninja with Searchy.

I’ve wanted to do a “What’s In Your Bag” post for years.
So now, finally, after Jeremy, Phil, Tre, Auggie, Phil again, and most recently Sean, I’m doing one. ?
For a long time I used an iMac, so that always felt like an inhibitor. After all, how could I do a “What’s In Your Bag” if my computer wouldn’t even fit into a bag in the first place?

One of the aspects that attracted me to the Mac and Apple products in particular was the way they dealt with notifications and encouraged an simpler interface with fewer distractions. Of course you can achieve similar results with Windows and android, and you can also make your apple devices over complicated and very distracting, but in my experience more developers are trying to create simple interfaces for Apple devices and help handle distractions.
With that in mind, enter Quitter a new (free) Mac app from Marco Arment that does one simple thing but does it well.

We’ve all been bitten by the bug before. You get in to the office and notice Stewart in HR has 2 brand new wide screen monitors sitting at his desk; “It increases productivity by 30%!” he says justifying the purchase. Though there is some truth to the gains from dual monitors and other technical upgrades they can also serve as the catalyst for what I like to call “Tech Creep”. It’s easy to see the new shiny gadget your co-worker gets but it’s not long until everyone in the office is requesting their upgrade and complaining about how slow their computers are. Though many of these upgrades may be completely warranted it’s good to cover a few points before opening the ol’ pocket book and shelling out for the latest tech.
