Do you know what the “hamburger icon” is?
If you’re a web designer of any type, I’m sure you know. If you use your smartphone for doing much online, you’ll know it when you see it.
The history of the hamburger menu icon is interesting and all, but should designers be using it for desktop use as well?
Here’s an interesting infographic that should help answer that question:
There was a time when I thought the hamburger menu icon was kind of goofy; but after years of using it, I can’t imagine seeing anything different!
Meanwhile, only about half of those over 45 years of age even know what it is! Not that 81% of users between the ages of 18-44 is much better…
What do you think about the hamburger menu icon?

Unless you’re in marketing this is such a non-issue I don’t even see the point of discussing it.
Eric Dye says
It’s not a none issue for those considering their web design and making thoughtful choices to better communicate with the user.
