The Japanese come out with some cool stuff, and being someone who loves food and is kinda OCD about freshness, this is perfect!
Japanese design agency TO-GENKYO have designed this sweet food label/barcode which, as ammonia is released from the meat (as it gets less fresh), becomes darker, eventually completely covering the barcode so that it is not possible to scan when the contents are not fresh enough.
I think that this is an an awesome example of forward thinking design!
