We saw the power of social networking in Iran and Egypt. We’ve seen the fear of social networking in China, as well as smartphone technology used to track the movement of China’s citizens.
Mobile technology allowed in freedom deprived countries comes with a price.
We can now add India to the mix.
The recent uprising in Egypt has caught the eye of many governments, and India is no exception. India’s government is worried about native militants using heavy encryption to communicate for coordinated attacks.
This incited government agencies to again demand the encryption keys to BlackBerry’s servers. The government is insisting that all communication service providers, including Google and Skype, should allow the surveillance of their networks.
Experts believe the Indian government will use the BlackBerry/RIM case to leverage a more comprehensive and long term survellence policy.
