The Impact of Global Data Centers [Infographic]

April 10, 2014

Did you know that 90% of the data in the world, today, has been created in only the past two years?

Crazy, right!?!

That’s a lot of data, so where is all being stored?

The infographic below take a more environmental approach to looking at three of the largest data centers on the globe: Google, Facebook and Microsoft. While it’s important to understand the environmental impact — as well as how responsible these companies are in keeping the environment clean — I found the information about data centers really interesting.

Check it out:

A couple thinks really struck me about this:

  • A large portion of the world’s online data is concentrated in only a few locations around the world.
  • An unprecedented dependency on electricity.
  • My data is not actually in the clouds. 🙁

What do you think about all this data?

Good information. I love technology. I love websites and services that offer “unlimited” or huge amounts of storage. But, I echo your closing thought: “A large portion of the world’s online data is concentrated in only a few locations around the world.”

Its actually scary to think about how electricity dependent our Internet is and our very technological lives. Sadly, I can see how this will end badly years down the road… But, for the time being I will enjoy using my MacBook to absorb content from this lovely thing called the Internet.

Thanks for the post! God Bless

We should learn from the Library of Alexandria. 🙂
